Live Review: The Districts with Young Tongue at Stubb’s

The_Districts_at_Stubbs-3Fat Possum, one of independent music’s most stalwart labels, has a roster full of distinct artists. When I heard The Districts, I was a little perplexed. The band sounded good enough–gritty folk rock that often moves from sparse arrangements to more frenetic and full compositions. However, I couldn’t quite see what set the band apart from a number of other folk rock bands, of which indie rock possess an overabundance as of late. But then I saw the Districts live.

The_Districts_at_Stubbs-1The band played a show at Stubb’s Wednesday night with local psych-folk band Young Tongue. As soon as the Districts began their set, the aspect that sets the band apart became obvious. Frontman Rob Grote sings with staggering passion as he stomps around the stage with manic energy. Drummer Braden Lawrence lays down intricate rhythms as he bounces restlessly on the throne. Plainly put, the band destroys live. The Districts are merciless in their onslaught of sound and emotion. If you don’t believe me, check out this video of their video for standout song “Funeral Beds.” If you’re really impatient, just take it to the four-minute mark to watch Grote completely lose it in the best way possible.

Young_Tongue_at_Stubbs-1Young Tongue, formerly The Baker Family, supported on the bill, giving Stubb’s a set of high-energy indie pop that incorporates elements of psych and folk. Frontman Stuart Baker hides behind a tangle of hair as a barefoot Liz Baker hops around the stage adorably, drumming on a steel keg, playing keys, and harmonizing beautifully. The band’s new single “Cat Calls” serves as their most notable effort yet and was a clear highlight of the set; check that song out here. Check out photos of the evening below.
