On “Happy,” a flat, pulsing beat gives way to eerie vocals before Mitski Miyawaki’s vocals begin to drift into a major key and sax joins the mix. Soon after, the arrangements bursts into upbeat drums and catchy indie rock cut with an edge of darkness. Eventually, buzzing bass notes propel the song forward to a grand crescendo as it reaches full effect, then sputters out. Lyrically, the song courts bleak undertones of desperation, yearning, and the unavoidable ebb and flow of happienss. Mitski, who has received love from a number of national outlets including NPR, will release her new album, Puberty 2, via Dead Oceans on June 17. Stream “Happy” below.
