Track Review: “The Gun Has No Trigger” – Dirty Projectors

Dave Longstreth is just the kind of avant-garde musical genius who bases an entire track on female backing crooning and simple snare and manages to have it come off as brilliant.  The backing vocals build alongside steady drums, as Longstreth’s voice meanders, off-kilter through minor keys, building until the track breaks out with the one-line refrain, “The gun has no trigger!”  The Lennon-esque shout channels another gun-centered song…the one from the White Album…any takers?  After the refrain, the constant single bass note drives the beat until the verse kicks back in.  The track sounds like a love affair between Nina Simone and David Byrne.  What else can we say?  It’s one of our favorite tracks of the year so far.
