North Carolina folk legend Arthel “Doc” Watson has passed away at the age of 89 after a fall. Watson had a vast knowledge of traditional American music and, in 1988, founded Merlefest- an annual music festival held in Wilkesboro, NC. In 1997 he received the National Medal of the Arts from Bill Clinton, was inducted into the International Bluegrass Hall of Honor in 2000, and won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2004 Grammys.
