Canada’s We Were Lovers has released a new single, “Islands,” from their forthcoming first full-length, Pyramids. The track is a summery dream of steady snare and synths that sound like ripples on the surface of water. The band seems to know all the right influences from which to draw, including indie artists Beach House and Toro y Moi. But it wasn’t until the second listen that I noticed how much the song’s chorus sounds like Blondie. The Canadian duo do a good job blending these sounds; the track is the kind that’s easy to listen to on repeat. I would guess especially so if you’re headed to the beach on a bright and blue summer day. “Islands” is a strong track, and We Were Lovers is a young band, but I’m still hoping to hear something more distinctively their own when Pyramids drops this year.
