Track Review: “Cry for Judas” – Mountain Goats

We previously reported about the Mountain Goats forthcoming LP, Transcendental Youth, which will be released on Merge Records on October 2nd. The first 1,000 who pre-order the album will receive a limited edition 7″ with two exclusive tracks, performed solo by John Darnielle. You can order the album at the Merge Records store, here.

The record is reported to feature the first horns section ever utilized by the band, evidenced by the first single, “Cry for Judas,” just released today. The song is an upbeat, brassy tune, full of hooks, as Darnielle employs his full, yearning voice. One of Darnielle’s most notable abilities lies in his absolute command of musical arrangement and melody. If “Cry for Judas” represents the spirit of the album that will follow, Transcendental Youth will be a record full of energetic, cerebral pop songs that further Darnielle’s status as one of independent music’s most important contributors.
