It’s difficult to tell if Deep Time sounded tighter than usual back from tour, because they always sound so perfectly on. Lead singer Jennifer Moore later joked with me, “No, we fall apart on tour,” smiling. Drummer Adam Jones might as well be a machine with the precise timing, sharp snares, and multiple instruments he handles simultaneously. I felt truly ecstatic to have Deep Time back in town, and equally so about the several upcoming performances they have scheduled, such as Wild Frontier Fest next Saturday, September 8th. The indoor room at Mohawk was packed, perhaps largely because of Deep Time’s return to Austin. However, a good amount of folks seemed in attendance to witness Black Gum, who were performing their final show. I have to confess that I don’t know enough about the band to do their final show justice, but I can say that it was an energetic, powerful set, made even better by the energy of the crowd. Drummer Rachel Badger commanded the set from behind her kit with ferocious beats while the guitarist and bassist switched responsibilities a few times, both possessing a cool, nonchalant stage presence.
