Video: Roger Miller – “Big Steam”

Mission of Burma’s Roger Miller has released a solo single on Good Road Recordings. The video, directed by Will C., features a disparate montage of footage ranging from a psychedelic, minimalist performance set-up to vintage footage of steam powered locomotives. Aurally, the song embodies Miller’s tendency for rough cuts and gritty subject matter while leaning headfirst into pop terrain as Miller intones, “Big steam, big steeeeaaaam!” I’ll admit I never really noticed it, but Miller (and to a degree Mission of Burma) recalls a less extreme, punk rock Tom Waits. It remains to be seen if this single indicates more solo material to follow from the classic punk hero.
