New Tracks and Video: Cayucas – “Cayucos” and “Swimsuit”

The sounds of the beach have longstanding traditions in pop music, most famously created by the Beach Boys. Since then, and increasingly in recent trends, bands have sought to establish fun-loving, beach party vibes via their pop tunes, some to greater success than others. Recent Secretly Canadian signing, Cayucas, falls among those who expertly render this appeal. From the washed out yet vibrant colors of their first video, to the lyrics and content of their songs, to the upbeat instrumentation, Cayucas represents the perfect soundtrack for your summer beach trip.

The band has just released a 7” single for “Cayucos” and features the b-side “Swimsuit.” The single is built on reverbed vocals that drift through the background, acoustic guitars mixed cleanly in the forefront, and a backbone of quick snare and hi-hat. Quirky, high-pitched squawks break through the mix as instrumentation falls away. When the lyrics command you to “snap your fingers…clap your hands…stomp your feet,” you’ll already be in compliance. “Swimsuit” is just as catchy, adding a subtle shaker and exchanging the guitars for a variety of keys.

You can watch the video for “Cayucos,” which tells the story of a girl determined to hang out with a collective of beach boys, below in all its adorable glory. Cayucas plans to release a full-length in 2013, and you can bet that we’ll have our ears open for news regarding that release. We recommend that you do the same. This is one to watch.
