Jagjaguwar has released the official soundtrack for Rick Alverson’s new film The Comedy, which stars Tim Heidecker (Tim and Eric Awesome Show) through iTunes, and it will be available through other digital retailers and on vinyl on November 13th. Heidecker appears as the lead actor in the film alongside longtime collaborator Eric Wareheim. Also in the cast are LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy and comedian Neil Hamburger, who has longstanding affiliations with indie-rock outlets from his albums being released on Drag City.
Featured on the soundtrack is a disparate range of artists that includes Justin Vernon’s tongue-in-cheek smooth jazz project Gayngs and cult hero songwriter Bill Fay. Excerpts from William Basinski’s The Disintegration Loops are also… integrated… into the soundtrack. Director Rick Alverson worked directly with Jagjaguwar to develop a series of songs that reflected the “autumn of the American era.”
Creative expression takes many forms, separated by slight degrees of interpretation, so I am always fascinated and excited by the intersection of musicians and filmmakers. The Comedy emerges as a quintessential example of this phenomenon. Below you will find the trailer for the film, a selected clip featuring an excerpt from Basinski’s Disintegration Loops and the full song listing for the soundtrack.
