This Friday, an event at Red 7 will pay tribute to and exhibit the hard work of some of Ausin’s most important fixtures in the independent music community. No, I’m not talking about bands, though some of Austin’s finest will be performing at the event. I’m talking about photographers. Photo Pop 2012, organized by Austin Town Hall’s Nathan Lankford, will showcase work from Austin’s outstanding photographers and provide an opportunity for you to purchase photos of some of your favorite bands while giving back to these hardworking professionals, who are Pooneh Ghana, Rick Kern, Gary Miller, Tim Griffin, Brian Gray and Randy Cremean. These photographers have not only covered local bands but have also had their work feature in larger national outlets like Rolling Stone, Prefix Mag, and Brooklyn Vegan. Your purchase of a photograph will also support the larger independent music community since a portion of these proceeds will be donated to HAAM, the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians.
The photo exhibition will take place from 7-9PM and will give way to a show later in the evening that will include Gender Infiniti, Low Times, Tiger Waves, Shivery Shakes and Grape Street.
Independent blogs have become mainstays as methods for music fans to get information about new bands. They are important because they bring fans news about artists not yet vetted by the system. And on the front lines of this coverage, providing stunning images of bands are these photographers. The photograph is often the first aspect seen of an article, sometimes the only feature seen, and its importance cannot be underestimated. These folks are an integral part of our visual-media-centered era. Come out and support them on Friday evening! Full info on the event below.
