Good Field has been rapidly gaining notoriety in the Austin music scene for some months now. As both an album release party and a tour send off, Good Field asked good friends (and good bands) Dana Falconberry and Belaire to help them celebrate with a show at Holy Mountain.
Any bill that has Belaire as an opener has to be amazing, since the band is easily capable of holding down a headliner spot on their own. As always, Bealaire was danceably wonderful, taking us through their tropically infused dreamworld of songs, which were punctuated by the awkward and hilariously dry banter of frontwoman Cari Palazzolo.
Dana Falconberry took the stage next, and reminded us all how much we missed her in the months that she has been away, secluded in a cabin, posting beautiful pictures to Instagram and Facebook. Falconberry is one of austin’s best songwriters and is a pleasure to watch live. The new songs she has already begun to integrate into her set sound outstanding, and we can’t wait for the next step in this artist’s career.
With Paul Price at the helm, Good Field climbed onto the stage for the final set of the night. This is a band that sounds better and better. After a self-titled EP, the band has recycled just a few of those and rounded them out with a whole slew of outstanding new material for their self-titled full-length. I don’t know how I never noticed that the band sounds something like Yo La Tengo, but it struck me watching them Friday, and I must say I love them even more for it. Good Field may be one of Austin’s most underrated bands, and that’s considering that they’re getting a good deal of buzz. However, as solid as this record is, wide acclaim should be engulfing this band within days. Keep your eye out for their SXSW performances.
(Note: Dear Holy Mountain, I love you, and you’re a cool venue, but Jesus, consider using something other than super saturated, very dim red and blue lighting! We’d like to see photos of the bands at your venue.)
