If you’ve read this blog much in the past year, it would be hard for us to conceal the fact that we love Dana Falconberry. Leelanau, her most recent effort, was an outstanding record not just locally, but in general. Falconberry’s songs are elaborate and beautiful wonderings at the mysteries of the world around us, often paying tribute to places from her past. Falconberry will just be returning to Austin after a short stint on the road that included a sold out show with Califone at Noise Pop in California when she performs at SXSW this year. Pop Press International is thrilled to have Falconberry on not one but two bills we curated: Tuesday March 12th at Cheer Up Charlie’s and Friday March 15th at Sidebar. Below is a brief interview with her, followed by her complete list SXSW appearances (which is quite extensive), and a video of her outstanding song “Lake Charlevoix.” Especially if you are here from out of town, but really, no matter who you are, see Dana Falconberry this year at SXSW.
Pop Press International: Who is one artist or band you’re hoping to catch while you’re in town?
Dana Falconberry: Definitely our label mates Social Studies (which shouldn’t be hard considering we are playing something like 3 shows with them)!
PPI: Have you ever played SXSW before? how many times?
DF: Yes! Maybe 6 years or so, sometimes officially, sometimes not.
PPI: What’s your most unbelievable SXSW memory?
DF: Puking behind the Hilton from nervousness? Meeting awesome friends like Shelley Short and Laura Gibson? Playing the Annie Street Secret Show under the Shoal Creek / 6th street bridge!
PPI: Is there a favorite album or artist the band listens to on the road?
DF: We love the newest Here We Go Magic record. We have recently been geeking out to every Nina Nastasia record in a row, over and over. Holy god we are in love with her!
PPI: What’s the best meal the band has ever had on the road?
DF: We make our own meals! Our best creation is what we call “tour slop”. It’s a quinoa salad with kale, red peppers, grapefruit, red onion, corn, black beans, and cilantro. We make a huge batch every three days and eat off of it in the van.
PPI: What’s one thing about Texas that’s totally different from anywhere else?
DF: It takes two days go get out of it, in any direction.
