When we caught Brass Bed opening for Shearwater last month, we were more than impressed. We were able to get in touch with the band for a brief interview in advance of their SXSW shows. The band plays their official showcase Saturday March 16th at Hickory Street; they play the headlining spot at 1:00AM. We recommend it to bring SXSW to a close with a great set by a great band.
Pop Press International: Who is one artist or band you’re hoping to catch while you’re in town?
Brass Bed: Black Lips, Jacuzzi Boys, Dana Falconberry, The Pharmacy, Beach Fossils, just to name a few. I’m interested in seeing how The Zombies hold up and how Austin crowds will react to Big Freedia.
PPI: Have you ever played SXSW before? how many times
BB: This will be Brass Bed’s third time at SXSW.
PPI: What’s your most unbelievable SXSW memory?
BB: Our first go round at SXSW started with playing a day party, drank beer all day, remembered I had to pick up my pass at the convention center, drunkenly found the convention center, meeting Big Star’s JODY STEVENS!, and then promptly losing my glasses. The kind I need to see. All in all, a good day.
PPI: Is there a favorite album or artist the band listens to on the road?
BB: I’m a huge fan of discovering music, so we aren’t already listening to Big Star, The Kinks, or Beatle’s solo careers, then I like to listen to the cd’s we traded from the show we played the night before. For better or worse, they’re always entertaining.
PPI: What’s the best meal the band has ever had on the road?
That’s a tough one. I’d say it’s a toss up between The Grit (an all vegetarian diner in Athens, GA) or Thai Tom’s in Seattle.
PPI: What’s one thing about Texas that’s totally different from anywhere else?
BB: The jorts.
