The National previously announced the release of Trouble Will Find Me and shared artwork from the album. Now, the band has released the album’s first single, “Demons.” Hinged on singer Matt Berninger’s bass vocals, the song utilizes flowing synths, effected guitars, steady percussion that has an outstanding snare syncopation, and a great bridge that emphasizes a string arrangement. Berninger delivers some lyrical gems in slant rhymes such as “I am secretly in love with/ everyone I grew up with.” The accompanying series of still frames made into a YouTube video depicts an artist creating the album’s artwork in chalk, eventually reaching a fully realized version before it is slowly erased by the song’s end. The song is everything we could have hoped for from the band. Trouble Will Find Me is out on 4AD May 21st.
