Last year, when we ranked the 20 best albums of 2012, we put Father John Misty’s Fear Fun at number three. What’s maybe more important is that we listened to the record more than any other during the year. Frontman, Josh “J.” Tillman has an onslaught of solo albums and is the former drummer for celebrated band Fleet Foxes. However, we stand firmly on the opinion that Fear Fun is his finest work to date. The songs draw from stalwart influences such as John Lennon, Leonard Cohen, and Harry Nilsson and add Tillman’s own penchant for biting sarcasm and absurdist imagery. Live, Tillman is arresting onstage, posing and shimmying like a graduate of the Nick Dave School of Dancing.
