Perhaps attributable to his reclusive nature to avoid the spotlight, it seems that Austin sometimes forgets that we have a priceless treasure in songwriter Bill Callahan calling the Austin area his home. After his early lo-fi experimental pop days, Callahan took Smog in a surprising new direction with the quintessential album A River Ain’t Too Much To Love. He followed by dropping the moniker and releasing a series of albums under his own name, the newest of which, Apocalypse, dropped two years ago now via Drag City. Perhaps something is on the horizon for Callahan, who will play a select string of dates this week, including a show at Austin’s Central Presbyterian Church on Saturday night. The venue seems a fitting locale for a songwriter whose music might be called cathartic or secularly spiritual. Stream “Riding For the Feeling” from Apocalypse below.
