Nelsonville Music Festival takes place each year in the rolling hills of Southeastern Ohio each year, and boasts alumni such as Andrew Bird, Avett Brothers, and Flaming Lips. This year’s festival, which commenced yesterday and lasts through the weekend, will feature headliners Cat Power and Wilco. Additionally, the festival has done a fantastic job of assembling some of independent music’s lesser known but incredibly talented acts that range from musical luminaries to up-and-comers. These acts include Jonathan Richman, Field Report, Michael Hurley, and Sharon Van Etten.
The festival remains relatively unknown, which strikes us as a bit of a travesty. With each year, mega-festivals such as Coachella and Bonnaroo become more and more difficult to access both in terms of simply acquiring tickets to actually being able to see a performance among a few hundred thousand people. The intimacy of a small festival in a beautiful setting seems like an invaluable experience. The year we were turned on to the festival with not enough advance notice to attend, but rest assured that it’s on our radar for next year’s installment. And here’s a Cat Power stream to celebrate the fest’s great lineup this year.
