If you haven’t seen Hardly Sound yet, you’re mistreating yourself. The show is a documentary television series that airs on KLRU, Austin’s PBS channel. Hardly Sound claims to focus on Texas underground music, and it does. But this is far less than half the story. The series immediately transcends music by carefully crafting narratives surrounding musicians who become characters in stories woven by series co-creator and director Chris Kim. No project is more deserving of your support, and you can donate to their Indiegogo campaign right here.
In season one, we saw episodes featuring The Bye and Bye, Royal Forest, The Bad Lovers, Emcee Eats, and Ralph White. Season two seems that it will be about honing the narrative aspect of the series, focusing even more on storytelling with episodes about Korean-American band Yum, all-girl band The Villettes, visionary songwriter Jad Fair, rock ‘n’ roll spirit RTB2, and indie-rock outfit Wiretree. The series is beautifully shot and wonderfully written; we couldn’t be bigger fans. Which is why we were ecstatic when we were invited to hang out in the studio for a session with Jad Fair and to interview Chris Kim. Check out the interview below and don’t miss Hardly Sound’s season two trailer, just released today, embedded after.
