Taft Mashburn is the creative force behind the band simply christened Taft, which is currently on a short East Coast jaunt with Austin indie-pop heroes Marmalakes. The tour lineup includes Andrew Stevens on guitar, who has performed with almost the entire roster of notable Austin bands over the years, as well as Josh Halpern and Max Colonna both of Marmalakes on drums and bass respectively. The tour culminates in an EP release party back in Austin at Scoot Inn on July 20th, but Taft has the new EP Intarsia available for streaming a couple weeks before its official release. In a Pop Press International exclusive phone call from the tour van, Taft has told us that the tour is going great, and that they’re excited to get back to Austin to celebrate the release of Intarsia.
The three song EP is a beautifully mellow introduction to the band’s textured indie pop. Tinges of Radiohead and Midlake can be found in the three songs, but folky and dreamy psychedelia also flow through the mixes. The EP’s busy and balanced textures are impressively crafted with twinkling guitars, steady stares, reverbed vocals, and subtle percussive flourishes. Intarsia is a beautiful dream that floats by on drifting clouds of indie pop gold. Stream the whole thing below and don’t forget to check the full tour dates. Marmalakes is reason enough to get out for a show, but Taft will be supplying solid cause for showing up early.
