Weekly Rundown: The Blow, Those Darlins, Grape St., Cut Copy, Arcade Fire, and Moonface

This week’s Weekly Rundown spans more than we could cover. Feel free to take some of the links to stories we almost wrote about in this edition. And good luck deciding between the three awesome shows all on Saturday night we cover here. Without further ado, our (slightly delayed) Weekly Rundown.

If you’re looking for the best local music on Halloween, we already told you about Tele Novella’s show at The Owl tomorrow night. But if you’re in search of a weekend endeavor, we like Grape Street, John Wesley Coleman, Booher, and Twinsmith at Hotel Vegas. Headlining the night, these former Harlem members will bring their best garage pop. Filling out the bill is an outstanding lineup of John Wesley Coleman, Booher, and Twinsmith. the_blowTOURING SHOW:
Who: The Blow with Love Inks Outside, plus Those Darlins with Diane Coffee Inside
Where: Red 7
When: Saturday, November 2nd, Doors at 9PM
Tickets: Two separate shows: The Blow tix here; Those Darlins tix here

Let me tell you how much we like The Blow. I once flew The Blow from Seattle to Austin to perform for a New Year’s Eve party sponsored by my blog. So, you can bet we’ll be at Red 7 on Saturday night. What was once a solo project and later included YACHT’s Jona Bechtolt is now a duo featuring Khaela Maricich and Melissa Dyne. The group has a new album out on Kanine Records, but what hasn’t changed is the project’s affinity for quick beats and heart-on-sleeve lyrics that explore identity and emotional struggle.

Even more reason to attend the show is local opener Love Inks, who has been out on the road and played several dates with The Blow. The trio creates immaculate and minimalist indie pop. Oh, and we’ve hosted them at a blog sponsored party as well. It’s a night full of bands we highly recommend at Red 7.

And, as if you need another excuse to get out for this show, while these two bands are performing on the outside stage, raucous indie rock outfit Those Darlins will be bringing the noise inside Red 7 and will be supported by Foxygen drummer Shaum Fleming’s new project Diane Coffee, who just released an album on the stalwart Western Vinyl Label. arcade-fire-reflektorALBUM: Arcade Fire – Reflektor

Often, we like to tell you about an album that you may not be thinking about buying or from a band you’re unlikely to be familiar with, but this week, we just can’t help ourselves. The album of the week is Arcade Fire’s Reflektor. Read our review here for full details, but to cut to the chase—buy this record; it’s one of the best of the year.

TRACK: Cut Copy – “We Are Explorers”

Cut Copy is giving us plenty to get psyched about in advance of their upcoming performance at Fun Fun Fun Fest on the Orange Stage on Friday November 9th. Recently they released a track from their upcoming full-length out November 5th, and now NPR is giving you the opportunity to stream their entire new record. In effect, the dance party starts a week or so early, but you can bet it will be in full effect at the end of the first evening of Fun Fun Fun Fest. Below you can stream “We Are Explorers” individually if you don’t care to open the NPR streaming player. To stream the entire record, CLICK HERE. Get tickets for Fun Fun Fun Fest right here.

VIDEO: Moonface – “Barbarian”

Moonface released their new album “Julia with Blue Jeans On” today on Jagjaguwar. The former Wolf Parade member finds himself constructing an album of deeply moving tracks as exhibited in the new video for lead album track “Barbarian.” Both the song and video are stark and intimate. In the video, three kids dance on grainy home video circa 1980, but the participant to the far right appears particularly bashful. And that shy participant is Spencer Krug. As dark piano chords resonate, we hear Krug’s earnest vocals as we observe a young version of the artist struggling to feel self confidence. The effect is striking and emotionally arresting. Watch above.
