It has never been production that makes a song great. Sure, there are bands that are built almost entirely on sound quality, and production emphasis can be almost necessary for the aesthetic of some projects to function–but it isn’t an essential component for enjoyable music. The digital age has all but blinded us to this fact, but Genuine Leather is here like some divinely birthed entity to show us the truth and light. “The Enemy” employs no-frills production and the perfect amount of grittiness. The song is sparse but moves eventually into layered parts that work together to feel remarkably full. Without a doubt, Genuine Leather has a mind for aesthetics that perfectly balances accessibly melody and a delightful departure from the status quo. I like it a lot.
