In the 90s, the gritty, powerful garage rock created by The Oblivians pouring out of Memphis made them one of the foremost groups in the scene. The band’s sound drew on 60’s groups like The Sonics and paved the way for contemporaries like The White Stripes; it’s impossible for me to listen to the Oblivians without thinking of these two artists. By the turn of the century, the band had split up and pursued other projects, such as the Compulsive Gamblers. Then, last year, the band returned with a new studio album, Desperation, released on In the Red. This Saturday, they will play the Mohawk. Austin is home to a slew of quality garage rock bands and we expect they’ll receive a warm welcome. Get tickets here!
