Live Review: RF Shannon Album Release Show With David Longoria, Canvas People at Mohawk

RF_Shannon_031814-2Whether a result of a recent tour, the many shows played in SXSW’s single week, or just the excitement of celebrating the release of their new album, the fact remains that RF Shannon sounded better than ever last night at the Mohawk. The band played their entire new EP, Hunting Songs, which is out now on fearless, up-and-coming Austin by way of Brooklyn label Punctum Records. RF Shannon’s songs float by like a dark folk dream, laden with eerie swells of pedal steel and guitar notes that disappear into the shadows. “Egyptian White Musk” is one of my favorite songs right now, and it’s lodged in my head for days every time I hear it. Many of the songs stretch over five minutes, slowly winding their way through a midnight forest, wet leaves underfoot, some coming-of-age hunting expedition. This EP is excellent, and we highly recommend you buy it.

David_Longoria-2The evening was opened by a set of sprawling acoustic songs delivered by David Longoria, who channeled Leonard Cohen in his droning, strummed folk ballads and instrumental numbers. Canvas People kicked off the night with a set of upbeat folk rock. Punctum Records accepted donations for SXSW Cares throughout the evening as a gesture of support for the victims of last week’s car accident.  At the front of the stage rested an altar of sorts with antlers, candles, and cloth. As the night served  to celebrate an album of somber, reflective music, it also worked to respectfully commemorate the value of humanity. Above all else, losing young members of our community reminds us of the importance of our togetherness and friendship. You can make a donation to SXSW Cares at this link.
