Skittering, electronic beats run the length of Dana Falconberry’s new single, “Palmless,” which is a product of a series of sessions with Spoon drummer Jim Eno and will be featured on a 12″ single to be released by Public Hi-Fi on Record Store Day. However, these clicks and ticks are the only constant in the entrancing song, which integrates wavering notes, beautifully eerie background vocals, melodic climbs, ghostly strings, and sudden swells of clanging guitar. As always, it is Falconberry’s incisive, dreamlike imagery and characteristic songwriting that provides the song’s gravitas. “Palmless” serves as the first physical proof of the direction Falconberry’s live show has been angling for the past year. Falconberry is at the forefront of Austin’s music scene, poised to reach a wide range of new fans with music that is both challenging and gorgeous. 2012’s Leelanau was one of my favorite albums of the year, and I’m expecting the next, yet-t0-be revealed project to be even more wondrous and complex. Listen to “Palmless” below. See Falconberry perform tonight at the Blanton Art Museum on UT’s campus.
