It is happening for this band, and I couldn’t be happier. The raw talent in the lineup of Tele Novella is staggering—the group’s songwriting and instrumentation embody the highest quality indie pop. Jason Chronis and Matt Simon played in the bands Voxtrot and Belaire—the former, a band that flirted with national success before dissolving, and the latter, a band that never saw the recognition it deserved. That last statement can also be made about Tele Novella frontwoman Natalie Ribbons’ former project Agent Ribbons. As a united force in Tele Novella, these musicians are finally tapping into the notoriety they’ve always warranted. Yesterday, USA Today premiered “Coat-Tail Rider,” a new track from the band.
Last week, we categorically praised the band’s song “Trouble in Paradise,” and “Coat-Tail Rider” continues a trend of pitch-perfect pop. The song is built on a reverb-laden noir guitar riff laid over toms that moves into and upbeat melody atop snare and tambourine. The changes are fresh, and the layered vocal tracks are rich. I can’t remember the last time I was so excited for a debut LP after a series of demos, singles, and b-sides. The band will celebrate the release of their new single “Trouble in Paradise” at Cheer Up Charlies this Saturday. Be there. We will be. Hear “Coat-Tail Rider” below.
