EDM continues to grow in popularity both within mainstream culture as well as in the world of independent music. Australian electronic music producer Flume is a name at the top of the pack as the genre expands. The artist has multi-platinum recordings in his native country, and his popularity stateside continues to expand. Flume releases music on Mom+Pop, the same label that releases punk rock heroes Cloud Nothings and psych rockers Wavves. Flume’s unusual place on the roster speaks to Mom+Pop’s diverse approach to releasing music and Flume’s own mindset for the audience he wants to reach. His latest collaborations with Autre Ne Veut and Ghostface Killah, video embedded below, as well as with Chet Faker also serve as indicators of his target fans. As I write about what’s happening in independent music, I’m still trying to figure out where and how EDM will take shape, but Flume is an artist whose helping to move the genre into interesting terrain. Flume will play a sold out Emo’s show tonight. Watch the video for “Space Cadet” featuring Autre Ne Veut and Ghostface Killah below.
