Löwin’s new song “Lobo” showcases everything that has always drawn me to Sara Houser’s work. Front and center in the mix are Houser’s astounding vocals, and her lyricism takes center stage. The song relays the story of transforming into a wolf and inadvertently eating one’s lover. Although Houser’s talents give the song its strength, perfectly placed guitar embellishments by Adam Mason and propulsive drumming by Chris DeGeorge complete and bolster the song. The song’s two hesitations, around the 1:20 and 2:00 minute marks build a perfect amount of tension, the first time, suppressing energy and the second, unleashing it with force. As the song plows through its final minute of crunchy riffs, guitar soloing, and Sara Houser’s howling, Löwin gives the listener the commanding rock ‘n’ roll she’s so adept at orchestrating. Löwin has a similar bombastic energy as Ume or Megafauna, but delivers it with more finesse, cuts through it with undeniable grace. The band has only released two songs, and we can’t wait for more.
