Supporting their new album Sway (out September 23rd on Graveface Records), the bay area’s Whirr will be playing at Red 7 this Saturday September 6th. A sound equal parts atmospheric and heavy, Whirr carry on the shoegaze torch with the purest dedication to the genre. Taking cues from all the early 90’s heavy hitters (e.g. Slowdive, Ride, MBV), and the band’s frontman Nick Bassett (Nothing/Death of Lovers), the band continually generate tracks filled with pummeling, wall-of-sound guitar work, tempered by Bassett’s hushed vocal delivery. Though their debut, 2012’s Pipe Dreams, consisted of a more ambient, textural approach to shoegaze, Sway finds its footing in more aggressive territory, standing firm in mid-tempo arrangements looking further upward then back down at their pedal boards. Tickets for the show are available here. Doors are at 9; don’t miss this show. Opening is Austin’s own Carl Sagan’s Skate Shoes.
