Interview: Hikes’ Woodsy Selves Ready for Utopiafest

Hikes_at_CUC_062014-5Yesterday we brought you a Q&A with Austin band Borrisokane. Today, we’re proud to bring you another interview with an artist performing Utopiafest this weekend. Hikes will play tomorrow at 2:15 PM. Band member and force of total positivity in the universe Nathan Wilkins corresponded with us via email to answer a few questions in advance of this weekend’s festival.

Pop Press INTL: Utopiafest always brings out quite a few local acts; how are you feeling about being ambassadors of Austin’s music community out at Utopiafest?

Nathan Wilkins: It feels great! I really can’t grasp it yet because I haven’t been out there!! I am very excited though. I love representing such a healthy music scene. I hope it comes off in our live performance!

PPI: What are the best and worst experiences you’ve ever had at a festival as a band or an attendee?

NW: Best…. hmmm best was camping right next to the Mulberry river at Highberry festival this summer. It was incredible, and everyone came out of the river so happy and refreshed and ready to support the music and vendors. Worst…not worth mentioning… People complain so much about festivals and how they are treated. But really they’re amazing feats, and a beautiful display of teamwork/creativity.

PPI: What aspects of Utopiafest’s remote locale are you looking forward to?

NW: I’m just excited to camp and be close to trees and grass and fresh air… I don’t get enough of it like I used to, and I feel like i’m losing that … “woodsy” part of myself…like the peace inside of me… I don’t feel as happy when i’m away from the woods, and I’ve been away from the woods for a long time.

PPI: What touring acts are you excited to share a bill with out at Utopiafest?

NW: Dan Deacon! I’m very excited to be a part of his interactive set! Everyone! i’m just really excited!

PPI: In your deepest dreams, what is your utopia?

NW: Autumn. Ponca.

Stream music from Hikes below. Catch them tomorrow at 2:15 at Utopiafest.
