Marianne Faithfull Breathes Life Into A Dark New Single

Marianne Faithfull began her career in the early 60s by immersing herself in the exploding London scene, befriending the greater Rolling Stones entourage that helped get her career started with, “As Tears Go By,” in 1964 when she was only 18. She has continued to release solo material through her five decade career and is back yet again, this time with “Late Victorian Holocaust,” a moody number and help from an impressive list of collaborators. Nick Cave, Roger Waters, Steve Earle, Tom McRae and Anna Calvi all helped with songwriting duties. The single is released by Easy Sound Recording Co. in the US (the same label associated with EDJ who we recently wrote about). “Holocaust” maintains a murky depth with droning, washed out strings, punctuated with a stately grand piano to emphasize the ballad’s gravity and ethereal darkness. The melody seems ripped right out of Cave’s book; the delivery is a speak-singing affair as she repeats “sweet little sweet/my dreams are yours to keep.” The single will appear on Give My Love To London, out on November 11th in the US.  Get your pre-order here.
