Mutual Benefit, the multi-textured, dreamy pop project of Jordan Lee, will play Red 7 tonight. Mutual Benefit draws comparisons to artists like Sufjan Stevens by virtue of his sprawling, lush, crystalline song structures and orchestral arrangements, but Lee’s music feels more like exploring the deepest corners of a lucid dream than the anthemic chorale chants Stevens often creates. Live, the project can be reduced to simply Lee using pedals and loops to recreate his sounds or can expand to a full ensemble of players. The current tour incarnation has him performing with at least a few of his usual suspects. For $14, you get to be the recipient of Jordan Lee’s drowsy spell of beautiful sounds, and one independent music’s most talented voices gets to share his art with you. It certainly sounds like a mutual benefit to me. Local indie pop band Taft opens the night as an added bonus. Get tickets here, and check out the band’s video for “Let’s Play / Statue of a Man” below, along with a track from Taft.
