Austin Artists Dominate Initial Wave of SXSW Announcements

SXSW’s first announcement always comes as a huge shock to me. It’s hard to believe that almost a year has passed since the last installment of the ever-growing festival. This year, the initial list of musical acts included 24 (!) artists from Austin, TX. By comparison, Los Angeles had twelve, London had nine, New York only seven. Although SXSW has grown to epic proportions and many have bemoaned some of the decisions the festival has made, they do always seem to book a disproportional number of artists from Austin. It’s a nice thought: that even with the corporate sponsorships that increase each year, there are still unknown local acts getting love. We put together a list of a video embed from every Austin act from this initial list. Some of them aren’t bands we’d necessarily pick. Some of them aren’t even bands we’d ever consider writing about. However, this isn’t a time for discrimination. This is a post to give congratulations to these 24 artists and big props to the diverse music community of Austin, TX.
