The New Movement Hosts Epic Night with Comedy Underground

The popularity of comedy seems to have risen in tandem with independent music. It’s odd to think about something so broad as music or comedy as “popular” or “unpopular,” but it does make sense. As access to means has increased with outlets such as YouTube and Bandcamp, more and more people have tried their hand at creating art and being funny. Comedy has become a mainstay at music festivals across the country and the two crafts are kindred spirits of sorts. Along those lines, we’ve been thrilled to expand the content on Pop Press INTL. to include a recurring satire column called “Early to the Party,” penned by local commedian Karen Early. Which brings us to what’s happening at the New Movement Theater on November 22nd.

On November 22nd, the New Movement will host an epic night of comedy featuring all three of their flagship shows with beverages sponsored by Hops and Grain. They’re calling the event Comedy Underground. Get tickets here! You can attend one of the three shows for $10, or you can enjoy the entire night of comedy for just $15. The night will be hosted by Rob Gagnon and Lisa Friedrich, who will perform standup between the three main shows for the night. The three shows will be TNM Tonight, Bad Example, and the Megaphone Show. TNM Tonight is a talk show format hosted by Chris Sebilia, with an emphasis on structured segments, sketches, and comedically dark commentary. Guests are local and buzzworthy. Bad Example is a sketch show that has performed at FunFunFun Fest and NY Sketch Fest. The show is written and performed by a cast of some of Austin’s finest comics. The night’s final act, The Megaphone Show, will feature local comedian Kat Combs, regular at Queer Mountain, who will tell stories that will be used as fodder for a band of improv comics to perform.

Beverages for the night will be supplied by Hops and Grain. Pop Press INTL. will be on hand to take some photos and savor an excellent night of comedy. Remember that local comedians work hard just like local musicians and coming out is a huge and sustaining support for Austin’s burgeoning Comedy community. Get your tickets now, and we hope to see you Saturday!
