Ryley Walker’s Primrose Green Promises Vibrant, Blooming Songs

I’ve trusted Dead Oceans’ label owner Phil Waldorf’s music recommendations since he first sold me records in the early aughts from behind the counter at 33 Degrees, a since departed record store in Central Austin. Imagine my joy when Waldorf started his own label and began making those recommendations to the music community at large. Although the label stays pretty comfortably in the indie rock domain, styles of artists range from traditional and folk-based to definitively electronic and experimental.

With roots in jazz-folk, Ryley Walker, who has previously released material on Thompkins Square, has announced a forthcoming album for Dead Oceans. The title-track, “Primrose Green,” hinges on bright acoustics and intricate guitar work and is available for streaming now. The song recalls the work of Nick Drake. While jazzy flourishes of uncommon chords and unusual melodic sequences can be found, the song is entirely accessible and refreshing, almost impossible to dislike. Primrose Green is out March 31st on Dead Oceans. Check the groove below.
