Let’s not kid ourselves, Steve Gunn’s guitar playing towers above most guitarists creating music at the moment. Stylistically, fans of Kurt Vile will find much to like about Gunn’s simultaneously chill yet heady guitar-line-driven songs. Although, Gunn’s work tends to be less hazy and more sonically present with elements of Tom Verlaine’s guitar sensibilities. The video for new song “Ancient Jules,” culled from upcoming album Eyes on the Lines, out June 3rd on Matador, follows the motorcycle-mounted Gunn down a rural UK highway until his bike gives up on him. No worries, legendary guitarist Michael Chapman happens by in a car and gives Gunn a ride to his remote abode, where the two drink, talk, and jam. A perfect stylistic complement to Gunn’s song, the video utilizes understated color and composition and was directed by Claes Nordwall. Dig it below.
