Japanese Breakfast is poised to completely reinvent the sound musician Michelle Zauner established on her debut album, Psychopomp. Instead of catchy, shimmering pop, “Boyish,” the second song shared from upcoming album Soft Sounds From Another Planet, boasts an ambitious and soaring arrangement with buoyant strings and drifting vocals in the theme of Roy Orbison or The Everly Brothers. Zauner’s debut was infectious and lasting, but the early indicators from her sophomore album prove she’s determined to fearlessly push her art to impressive new heights. Music fans should be restlessly awaiting the arrival of Soft Sounds From Another Planet. The album lands on July 14th via Dead Oceans (who are absolutely killing it this week, given yesterday’s signing of Phoebe Bridgers). Japanese Breakfast will be in Austin at The Parish this Saturday night supporting (Sandy) Alex G, and tickets are remarkably still available. Stream “Boyish” below.
