Opening with a wavering, watery guitar chord and maintaining a mellow, fluid mood, “North of Anywhere,” the new single from Jack Cooper, meanders through soulful guitar parts and brushed snare with a nonchalance that recalls Velvet Underground. More contemporarily, the song recalls the work of Cooper’s other band, Ultimate Painting, in which he plays and co-songwrites. Cooper’s album Sandgrown will be released on August 25 via Trouble in Mind Records, which has quietly become an impressively consistent purveyor of outstanding albums of late.
