From the second Party Plants’s new EP begins to play, I love it. It’s a dish comprised of all my favorite ingredients: a little bit of lo-fi pop, a little bit of grit, a dash of twee. There’s much more going on that immediately meets the ear with Party Plants: the melodies are surprising and fun, the shifts are fresh, and it manages to be funny without being an outright joke. Then, there’s the subtle atmospherics and keys that lurk in the background on most of the songs and are especially lovely on “Fratricide.” Party Plants is for fans of Beat Happening, but there are touches of Pavement and other like-minded late 90s indie rock bands. The band plays Saturday, February 22nd at Trailer Space. You can stream the EP below.
