Austra has shared the title-track from their forthcoming four-song EP, due out June 17th on Domino Records. Although “Habitat,” like other Austra songs, is built around frontwoman Katie Stelmanis’ dynamic and impressive voice, the song feels more static and understated than some of the theatrical escapades on the group’s two album. Low, buzzing synths permeate the mix, which employs dark tones and steady electronic drums. The song’s nuance and even sheen isn’t something to balk it; this is simply a new side of Austra we have not yet experienced. Stelmanis says that the song is three years old, but never seemed to fit anywhere. To quote from the press release accompanying the news: “Habitat is an old song that we’ve waited almost three years to release, says the band’s Katie Stelmanis. “It didn’t seem to fit with the sounds of Feel it Break or Olympia, so we decided to finally put it out as a single along with 3 new instrumental tracks.” Stream “Habitat” below.
