Fun Fun Fun Fest always restores my faith in humanity. Friends are constantly telling me that in today’s culture, organizations have two linked goals: to become as large as possible and to rake in as much cash as possible. I insist that some element of human passion and authenticity must exist within us all. And every time Fun Fun Fun Fest releases their lineup, I feel it. Each year, the bill makes it clear that they book acts they truly believe in and love personally. Thank you, Fun Fun Fun Fest, for doing what you do.

Last night, the full lineup for the 2014 festival was released and we’re psyched as always. The headliners read pretty differently from any other event in the country: Death Cab for Cutie, Nas, Wiz Khalifa, Judas Priest, and Alt-J are among them. But most notably, the festival has booked indie legends Neutral Milk Hotel and Danish metal heroes King Diamond. The latter raises a great point about the marketability and profitability of festivals. There are a whole slew of people who will be coming out to Fun Fun Fun Fest that would never dream of going to one of the country’s larger festivals. Rather than just target the largest and widest demographics (i.e. the most homogenous), FFF has targeted a variety of smaller demographics.

Among the middle-tier and smaller acts announced, the Danes will have further presence with the excellent punk outfit Iceage, a band I keep missing and can’t wait to see. Other personal notables include New Pornograhers, Courntey Barnett, Metz, Run the Jewels, Angel Olsen, Atmosphere, and Majical Cloudz. It’s going to a be a great year. Tickets are on sale at 10AM, right here! If you want to hang out with us November 7, 8, and 9, get yours now! FFF9_poster_2014
