With Austin tastemaker Maggie Lea in the curatorial role, Cinema East is set for an amazing summer film series. Now in its fourth year of existence, the program continues to increase its reach by enlisting quality films starring increasingly notable actors. Last year, Alex Karpovsky, who you may recognize as Ray fro HBO’s Girls, appeared for a Q&A at one of the films. Karpovsky will appear in a minor role in one of the films this summer, The Foxy Merkins, which screened at Sundance. This summer, films will also include actors such as Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development) and Amy Seimetz (Upstream Color).
The series will include both documentary films as well as narrative features and will span a wide range of topics and genres. Leah Meyerhoff’s indie drama I Believe In Unicorns kicks off the festival on June 22nd. Other films include Amanda Rose’s documentary Approaching the Elephant, about the inaugural year of the Teddy McArdle Free School as well as Lawrence Michael Levine’s offbeat murder mystery Wild Canaries. All screenings are on Sundays throughout the summer at the French Legation. Watch several trailers after the series’ poster below.
