Stone Jack Jone, like his stalwart label Western Vinyl, flies under the radar. He’s a guy who should be getting a lot more talk than he does currently. His newest track “Circumstance,” released in advance of a forthcoming LP entitled Love & Torture, showcases all the reasons why. Eerie multi-tracked vocals and subtle, wavering minor key melodies unfold through gravelly vocals and plucked banjo. Mournful strings and thudding bass drum round out the mix. The upcoming album will include contributions from the likes of Patty Griffin and Lambchop’s Kurt Wagner (that’s him muttering those low vocals on “Circumstance”). Jones is an unsung hero of contemporary folk music, but I’m humming as loud as I can. Join in and listen to “Circumstance” below.
