Stillwater, Oklahoma band Other Lives arrive in Austin tomorrow night for a show at Mohawk. The group’s sound shatters any stereotypes you might hold about a band from a place called Stillwater in Oklahoma, as they create dark, brooding pop, dense in texture with electronic and orchestral flourishes. Other Lives share some aesthetic sensibilities with breakout UK band Alt-J. While the latter’s most recent record pushed minimalism further and explored higher musical ranges, it’s easier to imagine them going in a direction where they landed in the territory Other Lives explores on their new effort Rituals, released at the beginning of last month. These arrangements are as ambitious and propulsive as they are nuanced and delicate. Other Lives has grown in popularity in recent years to place them solidly in a middleweight tier of touring indie-rock acts, but Rituals has the power and appeal to develop their notoriety even further. If you’re a fan of uptempo, dark indie-rock tomorrow night is a must see show. As a bonus, you get to see Austin’s own Danny Reisch (Shearwater) on the drums. What more could you ask for? Get your tickets here. Stream two different songs from Other Lives’ Rituals below.
