Tonight! Tonight! is the latest “Building a Better Robot” benefit show for one of Pittsburgh’s punkest institutions, the Mr. Roboto Project. In their own words:
“With the 2016 version of ‘Building A Better Robot’, Roboto will be trying out something new. Instead of this just being a standard benefit with funds going into the general fund, funds raised by this show will be earmarked for a special project. This project will be a scholarship of sorts to encourage new promoters at the space. For each $50 raised as part of this show, Roboto will offer a free rental. These scholarships will be aimed at three types of people:
1) Young people who haven’t booked shows before (or at least not many shows)
2) Scene veterans who might do various other cool stuff but no longer regularly book shows
3) Promoters/musicians from outside Roboto’s normal DIY/punk rock circles”
Music starts early at 7pm, so no Jonas excuses allowed. Donations of all amounts are accepted.
Playing tonight is the Gotobeds, Pittsburgh’s own Sub Pop babies and 12xu vets. Sneering and smiling punk rock joints with a no-fucks-given attitude. The real deal.
Dream Phone (mentioned earlier today) will be bringing their party rock lo-fi buzz to the DIY space.
I’ve never seen Mrs. Paintbrush, so I’m not sure what to expect, but after listening here, I’m totally into it. Think Byrne/Bowie with more lo-fi glitchy weirdness. And maybe some hip-hop?? Go for it.
And then, local Victorian aesthetes and post-punk connoisseurs Blod Maud will be playing. Easily one of my favorite local bands playing right now; they drive mean and angular.
