We’re super-psyched the second issue of Madeleine Campbell’s zine Women in Sound will be released this Saturday. The zine serves to “showcase the achievements by women, queer, and trans* people working in all facets of live and recorded sound.” The event starts at 8pm will be held at Polish Hill’s own Babyland studios. In support of the release, there will be live music courtesy of Philly’s Trophy Wife and RONiiA out of Minneapolis. Local Pittsburgh bands Come Holy Spirit and Vostok will also be performing at the release which will serve as a fundraiser for Decarcerate PA, a grassroots organization encouraging Pennsylvania to stop building prisons, reduce the prison population, and reinvest in communities across the state. Issue #1 of Women in Sound was released last fall and featured fantastic interviews with both local and national recording/live sound artists including members of the Women’s Audio Mission, a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of women in music production and recording arts and sciences, established by Terri Winston in 2003. With the unfortunate ubiquity of stories relaying rampant sexism and misogyny in the music industry (read this cringe-worthy month-by-month breakdown of 2015), it’s important and refreshing to hear/listen/read positive praise about great women doing great things, and in their own words! Be part of the solution this Saturday and celebrate a fantastic read. Entry is $5, zines are $5.
