Like catching a glimpse of some glimmering object in the distance of a dim, dusky forest, Caitlin Kraus Torres’ songs hinge on dark melody but offer surprising flashes of lilting lightness. Kraus Torres will release a 7-inch this week via new Austin label Keeled Scales. Consisting of two songs, “Waiting for the World” and “Dead Man,” the untitled effort yields a pair of songs similar in their easy, drifting ambiance. The former draws the listener in with steady strums before revealing lovely strings; the latter canters along almost playfully with twinkling piano.
We’ve seen Kraus Torres perform several times over the last couple of years and have always appreciated her talent as a songwriter. However, these recorded versions present an impressive new depth to the songs, which are excellently rendered and also feature fuller arrangements than Kraus Torres’ usual solo performances. Kraus Torres’ guitar and piano are the songs’ center, while Adam Torres (guitar), Aisha Burns (violin), Dylan Rieck (cello), Andrew Stevens (drums), and Michael Landon (guitar and bass) offer nuanced flourishes. Landon recorded and produced the songs at Estuary Recording. You can pre-order the record here, and you can see Caitlin Kraus Torres perform at the 7-inch release show this Thursday, June 16th at the Salvage Vanguard Theater. Molybden and Longriver (who recently returned from a European jaunt) support. Listen to both songs from the 7-inch below.
