Sponsored by Lone Star Beer and billed as the Texas Heritage Festival, Thursday June 30’s show at Stubb’s will feature co-headliners Okkervil River and Shovels & Rope, as well as opening acts Girl in a Coma and Delta Spirit’s Matthew Logan Vasquez. And the whole thing is just $10. As the name promises, three of the four bands hail from the Lone Star State, with Shovels & Rope, who hail from South Carolina, being the exception. It should be mentioned that Okkervil River’s primary creative force, Will Sheff, left Texas behind some time ago, but long time fans will likely always think of the group as a Texas band. Some of my earliest recollections of seeing local Austin music after I moved here in 2001 were Okkervil River shows. After seeing them release their second album to a modest crowd at The Mercury (now The Parish) more than a decade ago, it will be with a joyful pride that I watch them headline Stubb’s’ outdoor stage tomorrow night. Okkervil is set to release a new collection of songs, Away, on September 9th. You can stream “Okkervil River R.I.P.,” a track from that album below, along with tracks from other performing bands. Tickets for the Lone Star Beer Texas Heritage Fest are available for just $10 right here.
