Circa mid-2000s, when Cass McCombs was just beginning to release music, I had the fortune of dating a girl from Baltimore, where McCombs lived for a time and the label, Monitor Records, who released his first album is based. I got in on the ground floor of listening to one of the best songwriters making music. Which is pretty damn lucky. With each passing album, it seems this highrise grows taller with a new class of Cass faithful. His last, Big Wheel and Others, was a sprawling tangle of styles and aesthetics. Cass exploring the rooms in the mansion of his craft. His newest, Mangy Love, focuses his energies on dark, brooding folk, harkening back to the unified palette of earlier releases, but contains his most fully realized songs to date. It’s an excellent time to join the following. Catch Cass McCombs tonight at The Parish (buy your tickets here or try to win them from Do512 here), and stream “Opposite House” from Mangy Love below. Big Search opens the night. Stream their song, “Can’t Understand the News” below.
