Fifteen seconds into Deerhoof’s new released song from their forthcoming album Breakup Song, you think you might be listening to a Miami based brass band, but then the band starts to work their experimental pop magic. “The Trouble with Candyhands” gives us a pop beat with flares of buzzes and distortion. The energetic and danceable verses could be a highlight in any song, but Deerhoof takes it to the next level with the chorus, employing a dramatic shift that remains incredibly smooth. Over twinkling keys and a distorted synth line, lead sing Satomi Matsuzaki sings sweetly, “When you bring me flowers.” We’re hoping every cut from the new record will be as delightful.
